about
Kyle Smith
designer · engineer · multimodal artist
I'm a designer, engineer, and researcher building creative AI systems for artists — by artists. I'm a Ph.D. student in the Creative Music Technology Lab, part of the Music Technology Department in the College of Design at Georgia Tech, where my research sits at the intersection of music technology, human–computer interaction, and creative AI.
I design instruments and systems that treat machine learning as a creative collaborator rather than an author — generative interfaces, biomimetic instruments, and spatial-audio environments. My practice blends AI, HCI, and ecological principles into adaptive, embodied sonic experiences.
Previously a field engineer and photographer for National Geographic's Boiling River Project in the Peruvian Amazon, I've been recognized as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts and a YoungArts finalist, with work shown at the Kennedy Center, and as a finalist at the International World Cup of Innovations (MWC Barcelona). I hold a B.S. in Creative Technology & Design from CU Boulder's ATLAS program and an M.S. in Music Technology from Georgia Tech, and I have two patents.
